1968 Lamborghini Miura P400

We recently completed a full, ground up, restoration on this wonderful car, the 222nd Lamborghini Miura built, chassis number 3640, matching numbers. This car has covered a genuine 27,000km (17,000 miles) from new and has an interesting history file, including royal ownership.

Iain Tyrrell carried out an extensive evaluation of the engine prior to removal. Included in this process was a review of the maintenance history, the mileage, and even the climate in which it spent most of its life. This information was then allied to specific tests based on Iain's particular knowledge and past experience of the Lamborghini V12 engine.

The engine was declared in rude health and received a full set-up, including tuning the (now virtually priceless) Weber 40 IDL carburettors to perfection. In spite of a reputation for recalcitrant low-speed running (commonly found, unfairly earned and often due simply to lack of correct tuning), this engine now runs like a well-oiled clock. Following sympathetic restoration and detailing, the power unit was re-installed.

After complete component stripping and paint removal, the body was also scrutinised. Evidence of electrolytic corrosion (between aluminium skin and steel structure), damage and rust were (incredibly) almost nonexistent to all components. The body benefits from being beyond the 200th Miura built, with two very important production structural improvements incorporated. Also "SV" spec chassis gusset plates have been fitted post production and required nothing more than improved presentation and fit.

The next step in the process was to finish preparation and paint the body in its exact original "Verde Miura", aka lime green, and to undertake a detailed, sympathetic refurbishment of other components, including:

1. The interior trim was precisely replicated, in exclusive Nappa leather to as closely as possible replicate the original vinyl.

2. The original from new steel ANSA exhaust was carefully refurbished to exactly capture the original sound (stainless steel exhaust systems do not sound the same). This included fabricating original perf-filled megaphones to factory specification. 

3. The original from new Ariston shock absorbers were refurbished and dynamometer tested to ensure 100% correct performance (four graphs on file in the car's history). These were only fitted to Miuras new for 18 months are now completely unobtainable.

As an example of the many small but important challenges involved in this restoration, it was necessary to re-make one of the headlamp lift motor gearboxes from scratch as the original had deteriorated beyond repair.

We are understandably proud of this project; to find and restore such an intrinsically sound and original Miura is a privilege and it is now one of the most original fully restored Miuras in existence, having used 95% of the original factory parts from new.

After completion this car was invited for prominent dispaly at the Goodwood FOS and Revival where it won an award. It was also the cover car and subject of an 11 page feature and photo shoot in the 100th issue of Octane magazine.
